Alfie & Hetty

Alfie & Hetty lived side by side in the Roaring 20's in "The Glebe", a suburb of contradiction. Like the Name sakes and the suburb, so is the offering. A homely restaurant and courtyard named Hetty's place, and a Cocktail and casual diner Alfie's Upstairs

“The Glebe” was always a suburb of contradiction - the affluence of the Lyndhurst estate and the Grand Terraces running down toward the water, alongside of the working classes, the builders, factory workers, and lumber yard workers.
Alfie & Hetty continues with this contradiction, a contradiction that works through the friendships and people of this suburb. This exemplified by our two name sakes – Alfie a gangster and party boy, and Hetty a sincere and caring member of society, who once lived side by side and were good friends.

Mrs. N Stapleton or better known as Hetty, was an institution to her neighbours and the community for being a caring and gregarious woman. Hetty would cook for the locals and their children and was especially well known for her famous Sunday roasts.

Hetty lived at 207 Glebe Point Rd until her passing in 1925 awaiting the return of her son who was lost in WWI. In honour of this lovely woman we have not only named our restaurant Hettys’ Place, but also offer the famous roasts she was so well known for.

Alfie White, who lived in 209 from 1921, was known to be the right hand man of the local gangster. Alfie was the collector of money owed, and was also in charge of the Speakeasy, which he ran out of the upstairs of this house.

So in honour of Mr. White we have named our upstairs area Alfie’s Bar, a place where the elegance and notoriety of the 1920’s is combined with Hetty’s favourite dishes, and Alfie’s favorite cocktails.
